Open Source News ZA

Show your work. That is the whole idea. Open the way software is open: you can check our facts, you can re-use our work with credit, and every story links to the record behind it. Not “trust us” — verify us.

Most news in South Africa is either paywalled and corporate, or loud and closed — pages that copy a story with no credit and no source. We do the opposite. Every story carries a Source: line linking the actual record: the court roll, the SAPS statement, the commission transcript, the government gazette.

The five rules

  1. Show the source. Every story links to the primary record. Never “sources say” on its own.
  2. Publish the corrections. Openly, publicly, permanently — on our corrections page. Almost nobody in this country does this. We do.
  3. We report what is already out there. Our stories come from the public record, and every one links to the source behind it.
  4. Free to re-use — with credit. Other pages may repost our work if they credit us. That clause is deliberate: we want to be the source other pages quote.
  5. No paywall, no spin. We do not sell the story back to you, and we do not tell you what to think about it.

Where our work lives

Daily briefs and the evening roundup are on this hub. In video: PoliPulse (politics and the law), Mzansi Courts (the street view) and Madlanga Today (the commissions, sitting by sitting).

Check us, see our sources, read our corrections. Contact: info@mzansinewshub.com.
