South African Public Holidays 2027: Every Day Off and the Long Weekends

South African Public Holidays 2027: Every Day Off, and the Long Weekends They Make

South Africa has twelve public holidays. They are fixed by the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994, and the Act carries one rule that catches people out every few years: when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday is a public holiday as well.

In 2027 that rule gives two extra days off, Monday 22 March and Monday 27 December. It also makes March the densest holiday month of the year, with three days off inside eight days. This page lists every 2027 date, the days of the week they fall on, and the long weekends you can actually plan around.

Every public holiday in South Africa in 2027

Date Day Holiday Note
1 January Friday New Year’s Day Long weekend
21 March Sunday Human Rights Day Falls on a Sunday
22 March Monday Human Rights Day observed Because 21 March is a Sunday
26 March Friday Good Friday Easter weekend starts
29 March Monday Family Day Easter Monday
27 April Tuesday Freedom Day Take Monday and you have four days
1 May Saturday Workers’ Day Falls on a Saturday, no day in lieu
16 June Wednesday Youth Day Midweek break
9 August Monday National Women’s Day Long weekend
24 September Friday Heritage Day Long weekend
16 December Thursday Day of Reconciliation Take Friday and you have four days
25 December Saturday Christmas Day Falls on a Saturday
26 December Sunday Day of Goodwill Falls on a Sunday
27 December Monday Day of Goodwill observed Because 26 December is a Sunday

That is fourteen dates carrying holiday status in 2027. Ten of them fall on a normal working day; four fall on a Saturday or Sunday, so they cost nobody a working day.

The Sunday rule, in plain words

Section 2 of the Public Holidays Act says that whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is a public holiday. It is not a decision taken by a department each year, it happens automatically, and it is why 22 March and 27 December appear in every 2027 calendar.

The rule does not apply to Saturdays. That is why Workers’ Day on Saturday 1 May 2027 and Christmas Day on Saturday 25 December 2027 do not create a Monday off.

The long weekends worth planning for

  • New Year, 1 to 3 January. Friday to Sunday, three days, no leave needed.
  • Human Rights Day, 20 to 22 March. Saturday to Monday. Eight days later the Easter weekend starts.
  • Easter, 26 to 29 March. Four days off, Friday to Monday. One day of leave on Thursday 25 March turns it into five.
  • Freedom Day, 24 to 27 April. Saturday to Tuesday. One day of leave on Monday 26 April gives you four days.
  • Youth Day, 12 to 16 June. Youth Day is a Wednesday. Two days of leave, Monday and Tuesday, turn the weekend and the holiday into five days off.
  • Women’s Day, 7 to 9 August. Saturday to Monday, three days.
  • Heritage Day, 24 to 26 September. Friday to Sunday, three days.
  • Reconciliation Day, 16 to 19 December. Thursday to Sunday. One day of leave on Friday 17 December gives you four days.
  • Christmas, 25 to 27 December. Saturday to Monday, three days.

March is the month to watch. Human Rights Day on Monday 22 March, Good Friday on 26 March and Family Day on 29 March sit inside eight days, so a single week of leave in that stretch buys a long break.

What can still change

Two things can add a date to this list.

  • An election day. When the President declares a day for a national or provincial election, that day is a public holiday. The published 2027 list carries no election day. If one is proclaimed, it will be gazetted, and we will add it to this page.
  • School dates. Public holidays apply to everyone. School terms are a separate calendar, published by the Department of Basic Education, and they include administration days that are not public holidays. The 2027 school calendar lists 26 April as a special school holiday.

Where these dates come from

  • The Department of Basic Education’s published 2027 school calendar, which sets out the same public holiday dates for schools.
  • Government’s own public holiday list on gov.za.
  • The Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994, for the Sunday rule in section 2.

We keep this page current. If a date is added or a day is proclaimed, it changes here first, and the change is logged on our corrections page.
