From the day

MADLANGA COMMISSION — DAILY BRIEF, 7 AUGUST 2026

No new tape landed on Thursday 7 August or Wednesday 6 August. The last sitting on record remains Tuesday 4 August — a 2.5-hour OBS capture now on our server.

WHAT THE 4 AUGUST TAPE COVERED

A senior police officer testified about how a high-profile arrest of senior SAPS members was handled — or mishandled.

– The witness overheard colleagues discussing an arrest that the IDAC (Independent Directorate Against Corruption) had contacted them about on 26 June 2025. The arrest targeted high-ranking employees of the police. – He raised concerns because a matter of this magnitude — senior police officers — was moving forward without a DDPP (Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions) overseeing it and without a chief investigator assigned. – The courtroom was packed with police officers. Advocates Clature and Vesgetting were present, seated at the back. – Key procedural point from the testimony: a subpoena can only be signed by a TDPP. If a prosecuting group does not have a TDPP, the witness testified he cannot see how they can legally proceed. The hearing dug deep into prosecutor-led investigations and why a senior prosecutor must guide every major investigation. – Ms Inos accompanied the witness with a security detail when the request was made to attend court.

WHAT IT MEANS

The docket-collapse thread remains the spine of this inquiry. The State’s case-file integrity is under sustained challenge. No new arrests were confirmed on the 4 August tape. Bail conditions remain live. The appeal points continue to build around the docket issues — if the docket was improperly handled, the entire prosecution chain weakens.

NEXT WATCH

The Commission’s next sitting. If a tape lands for Friday 8 August or over the weekend, it will be processed immediately. Any new arrest, ruling, or procedural ruling from the panel will be summarised here the same day.
